vacation potato salad from https://test.pleasepassthepeas.com

Lately, my feed has been nothing but pictures of other people’s vacations: Hawaii, Maine, Michigan. Sun everywhere.

Not here though. Here the rain is pouring down, the lights are flickering and I’m racing to get this post up before the internet goes out.

Fortunately, we had much better weather for our own vacation a few weeks ago. We stayed in a beach condo owned by the parents of some friends and did nothing but swim, read and play board games for days….

Ottolenghi’s Farro Salad

Ottolenghi's Farro Salad from https://test.pleasepassthepeas.com

Two and a half years ago, Paul and I flew to London, rented a car and drove around Wales for about a week, during which we somehow got into the habit of pausing each afternoon for scones with jam and clotted cream.

By the end of the trip we could hardly fit into our clothes.

But before we started in on all the scones Wales had to offer, we stopped to pick up lunch from Yotam Ottolenghi’s eponymously-named take out joint in Notting Hill.

Preserved Lemon and Greek Yogurt Salad Dressing from https://test.pleasepassthepeas.com

This is what I did with the last of my preserved lemons.

It’s a simple little dressing with a lot of lemony flavor.

This recipe makes a pretty thick dressing, about the consistency of mayonnaise, although it does depend on the brand of yogurt that you use. I think I used Cabot, but I can’t say for sure. We go through a lot of yogurt around here and the brand varies depending on where I do the shopping.

If the dressing is too thick for your liking, you could definitely thin it down with a little water, but I like it the way that it is. …

Apple, arugula and avocado salad from https://test.pleasepassthepeas.com

I thought it might be time for a salad.

We’ve been eating a lot of dessert around here. The cooler weather makes me want to bake.

Also, Paul and I used to eat dinner around 8 p.m. or so, but now we eat much earlier so that we can have dinner as a family before E. goes to bed. That means we’re often ready for a snack by 8:30 or 9 p.m.

I like winding down in the evenings with a slice of cake or a brownie, but I like a little balance too. …
